Trong việc diễn đạt bằng ngôn ngữ nói chung, và tiếng Anh nói riêng, thành ngữ thường được dùng trong các tình huống thân thiện, ít học thuật. Chính vì lí do đó, các bạn thí sinh IELTS cần lưu ý không sử dụng thành ngữ trong văn viết học thuật, trang trọng (Academic Writing). Tuy nhiên, ngôn ngữ nói có phần ít học thuật hơn. Vì vậy, việc dùng một hoặc hai thành ngữ trong bài thi nói một cách đúng nghĩa, đúng ngữ cảnh sẽ giúp các bạn nói tiếng Anh giống người bản xứ hơn và tất nhiên sẽ được đánh giá cao hơn. Dưới đây, THẦY MẠNH IELTS (GM EDU) sẽ giới thiệu với các bạn một số thành ngữ được dùng phổ biến, giúp các bạn ghi điểm cao cho bài thi nói.

1. Over the moon– to be extremely pleased or happy: rất vui
   e.g: I was over the moon when I passed my speaking test.
    
2. Once in a blue moon– happens very rarely: rất hiếm xảy ra
   e.g: A student will get a 9 in the IELTS writing test once in a blue moon.
    
3. A piece of cake– very easy: rất dễ
   e.g: Getting a band 6 in the speaking test will be a piece of cake.
    
4. A drop in the ocean– a very small part of something much bigger: một phần rất nhỏ của thứ gìđó lớn hơn nhiều.
   e.g: Just learning idioms is a drop in the ocean when it comes to preparing for the speaking test.

6. Actions speak louder than words– it is better to actually do something than just talk about it: nói thì dễ làm không dễ.
   e.g: Lots of people have great business ideas but do nothing about them. Actions speak louder than words, just do it.
   
    
7. Back to the drawing board– when you attempted to do something but failed and have to try again: nổ lực làm lại
   e.g: I got 4.5 in reading! Oh well, back to the drawing board.
   
    
8. Put all your eggs in one basket- put all your money or effort into one thing: đầu tư hết công sức, tiền của vào một việc (ý nhiều rủi ro)
   e.g: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. You should apply to lots of different universities.
   
    
9. The in thing– something fashionable: một vật thời thượng
   e.g: The new iPhone is really the in thing at the moment.
   
    
10. The real McCoy– genuine or not fake: hàng chính hãng
    e.g: I don’t think her new handbag is the real McCoy.
    
     
11. Off the top of my head– saying something without thinking first: nói mà không cần nghĩ ngợi gì
    e.g: Off the top of my head, I’d say about 2 or 3.
    
     
12. Run of the mill– average, ordinary: bình thường, phổ thông
    e.g: Apple phones are very run of the mill these days.
    
     
13. Soul mate– someone you trust very deeply: người bạn rất tin tưởng
    e.g: My husband is not just my lover, he’s my soul mate.
    
     
14. Down in the dumps– sad: buồn
    e.g: I was really down in the dumps after my dog died.
    
     
15. Found my feet– to become comfortable doing something: trở nên thoải mái khi làm việc gì
    e.g: Moving to a new city was difficult as first, but I soon found my feet.
    
     
16. Set in their ways– not wanting to change: không muốn thay đổi
    e.g: My parents are quite traditional and set in their ways.
    
     
17. Go the extra mile– do much more than is required: làm nhiều hơn được yêu cầu
    e.g: I decided to go the extra mile and move to England to really perfect my English.
    
     
18. A hot potato– a controversial topic: một chủ đề gây tranh cải
    e.g: Abortion and capital punishment are hot potatoes in my country at the moment.
    
     
19. Miss the boat– miss an opportunity: bỏ lỡ một cơ hội
    e.g: I sent my application in late and I think I missed the boat.
    
     
20. Costs an arm and a leg– really expensive: rất mắc
    e.g: Those shoes must have cost an arm and a leg.
    
     
21. Sit on the fence– to be undecided: lưỡng lự, chưa quyết định
    e.g: I haven’t made my mind up about that issue, I’ll have to sit on the fence.
